Kristin Hyde has an insatiable need for two fundamental elements in her life – a love for creativity and a passion for the use of colour. Kristin says “Colour energises me, it feeds my soul.” These elements provide her with a source of contentment.
Primarily an intuitive and mixed media artist, Kristin also harbours an appreciation for textiles, specifically felting, and holds an interest in silversmithing, particularly Art Jewellery.
In retrospect, Kristin acknowledges having consistently engaged in various forms of creative activities. Largely self-taught, her love for colour and texture has led her to experiment with diverse mediums, with a primary focus on acrylics and resin, a craft she has practised and perfected for over 12 years.
Kristin's affinity for nature and flowers has prompted exploration into eco-dying and printing, where she transforms nature's offerings into beautiful patterns on silk, linen, and merino wool.
Originally hailing from Wellington, Kristin has called Auckland home for the past 40 years. Residing on the outskirts of Auckland, at the Bombay Hills, she has created a creative sanctuary surrounded by trees, a stream, and various birds and wildlife, drawing much of her inspiration from this rural setting.
In early 2020, after having the best holiday of her life, a month in The Bahamas with her oldest son on his yacht and amidst the early development of the Covid pandemic, Kristin made the courageous decision to resign from her career as an International Flight attendant, a career that had spanned 40 years, to pursue her passion full-time as an artist.
Despite the challenges brought on by Covid, Kristin has no regrets, finding herself busier and happier than ever. Her motivation to paint and create stems from a desire to express emotions, unlock untold stories, and evoke memories. Her paintings aim to bring joy and smiles, providing an escape to another world, if only for a brief moment. Her creative process is driven by heartfelt intentions and a therapeutic purpose.
Kristin's artistic style is predominantly abstract and reflects an eclectic and diverse approach. She acknowledges the privilege and hard work associated with working in one's passion – a true embodiment of TLC, (Time, Labour and Coin).
Kristin was recently awarded the Liquitex NZ Sponsorship award at the Wellington Art Show 2024
Feeling humbled, Kristin is grateful to have her jewellery, textiles, and art find homes worldwide, a testament to the universal appeal of her creative expressions.
